Day 2
Day trip with Reykjavik excursions exploring The Golden Circle. what was very noticeable was the changes in landscpe and weather conditions within a 10 min timescale from sunny and warm to freezing with deep snow. We saw the Hydro plant which even had a warmed car park so it as snow free. Then we went through fertile farming land with greenhouses growing salad vegetables. En route we saw lots of the Icelandic horses which are unique in that they have an unusual gait. We visited the spectacular Gulfoss waterfall - freezing walk to viewing point. Then 10 mins back in same direction we visited the Geysers which spouted very high about every 5 mins, complete with a strong smell of sulphur. Then onwards to Thingvellir national park and took a walk up to view the tectronic plates of Eurasia and America. Tea consisted of 10 to 11 shop which cost £28!
Day 1
Reykjavik here at last, wanted to visit since 1991! Today done nothing but eat, never eaten so many different foods in one day and some have never eaten ie charr - like salmon, puffin, lamb’s tongue, lemon foam, skyr dessert. Also tried a Black Death shot at Silfur restaurant. Silfur was my choice of restaurant which I had booked prior to travelling as it looked very interesting in terms of decor and menu choices. We were the only ones in there but it had a great atmosphere and lived upto all my expectations. A great waitress who gave us information on the food we were eating saying that puffin and whale were specialities rather than the norm for Icelanders.
After the meal we tipsily explored the main shopping area, quite a mix of designer gear and tourist shops. Walked back along the bay and took some photos of the eclectic buildings and interesting sculptures. On retun to the room we fell asleep for 2 hours.
We then visited the spa which we had all to ourselves. Manchester airport was virtually empty, breakfast this morning in the hotel, lunch at the restaurant nd even dinner we seemed to be alone- quite strange but also quite pleasant. Tthe spa was cave like and consisted of a hot tub, steam room and sauna.
Came back and got changed for dinner a 4 course gourmet meal booked as part of the package. Again just us and another couple, looking out across the bay 8 floors up. Lovely food, salmon, duck, lamb and delicious dessert plus the tastybread and butter.
Back to the room to chill and drink more wine!
